Saturday 24 October 2015 9 AM Browntown, VA

Thanks for running! 2014 results, splits, & photos are up!
The sixteenth annual Greasy-Gooney 10K is in the books, and we hope everyone enjoyed it! The weather was fantastic, the scenery was stunning, and we had a grand total of 88 finishers, with Charles Bowles (37:14) and Crystal Rapp (43:36) nabbing the overall victories. Also of note were the performances of Mario Zuniga, age 50, and Ginny Hughes, age 64; Mario's 38:16 finish for third overall works out to the second best age-graded performance in G-G history (equivalent to a young man's 33:28; 80.23% PLP), while Ginny's 52:42 (equivalent to a young woman's 38:03; 79.72% PLP) was our best all-time women's age-graded finish!

OFFICIAL RESULTS are up, sorted both by overall finish place and age group place. Also posted are everybody's 5K split times! We're pretty sure everything's correct, but if you spot any mistakes, send us an e-mail. (Our event records have also been updated through 2014, so check the bottom of our results page for links to various all-time lists. We've got things sorted by name, by time, by age group, and by age-graded time, along with single-age records.)

RACE PHOTOS have also been posted, both on Picasa Web Albums and on our Facebook page in two sets (Set 1, Set 2; feel free to tag anyone you know!). These photos are free for personal use. If you have questions about or problems with the photos, or if you have any G-G photos of your own that you'd like to share, let us know.

Many many many thanks to our race day volunteer crew, including (in alphabetical order) Kyra Brown, Nancy Bullock, Paul Grosz, Michele Kushner, Lynne Lawrence, Terry Leckie, Alexander Snyder, and Karen Young. If I forgot to mention/credit anyone, please let me know!

Thanks as well to Tom Lacombe, the Shenandoah Valley Runners, Browntown Baptist Church, the Comstock family, Judith Weber & Denise Hyde for random prize contributions, and the Browntown Community Center Association. All proceeds from the race benefit the community center.

If you have any questions or comments about this year's Greasy-Gooney 10K, or if anything eventful happened during the race that you'd like to pass along, or if you have any photos from the race that you'd like to share, feel free to send us a message. Next year's race is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 24 October 2015, so hopefully we'll see y'all back in Browntown next fall!

Easily the most scenic road race in the Shenandoah Valley, the Greasy-Gooney 10K is slated to take place on Saturday 24 October 2015 in the tiny Warren County village of Browntown. You'll be treated to beautiful views of the rural countryside and the nearby Blue Ridge, all at the height of the valley's fall foliage season. Sure, the course is somewhat challenging, but it's worth the effort. This race may be small, but it's one you're not likely to forget. Runners & joggers of all speeds are welcome to participate!

While the 2015 race is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 24 October, we still need to get the necessary permissions before we can publish the final race details. We expect to have the final 2015 race info out by late summer or early fall. In the meantime, we've updated the dates here on our Web site, but please keep in mind that none of the information here is 100% confirmed yet.

Entry for the 2015 race will open sometime in the late summer or early fall. As usual, we will offer online, mail-in, and race day registration.

We're always in need of volunteers. If you'd like to help out at the 2015 race, contact Karsten Brown by e-mail or at (540) 635-1773.

Festival of Leaves 5K

If you're looking for another fine race to run in Warren County, the 2015 Festival of Leaves 5K is tentatively scheduled to be held in Front Royal on Saturday 10 October! It's a lower budget affair than Greasy-Gooney (and not nearly as scenic), but many of the same people are involved.
Parking, registration, and the finish line are all in Browntown, Virginia, near the intersection of Route 649 (Browntown Road) and Route 613 (Bentonville Road). Browntown is about eight miles south of Front Royal. See the directions page for more details!

Schedule of events (Sat. 24 October)
7:45 AM - Race day registration & check-in begins
8:45 AM - Registration ends
9:00 AM - 10K start
10:15 AM - Approximate start of awards ceremony

IMPORTANT NOTE: While parking, registration, and the finish line are all right near each other in Browntown, the starting line is 0.8 miles west of Browntown on Route 613 (Bentonville Road). We don't have any sort of shuttle service, so you'll have to walk or jog there. Thus, please arrive in Browntown early enough to register or check in before 8:45 AM, so that you'll have plenty of time to get to the start before 9:00!

A gorgeous but occasionally tough ten kilometer (6.2 mile) "U"-shaped route starting on Route 613 and following the Gooney Manor Loop up the Greasy Run valley and back down the Gooney Run valley to Browntown. The first half is basically uphill, with 480 feet of elevation gain, while the second half is almost entirely downhill. The course is USATF certified (#VA99025RT). See the course info page for a more detailed description, elevation profile, and maps. And if you want to view some of the scenery beforehand, browse our selection of course photos!

We'll have trophies for the top three males and females overall, plus smaller trophies for the top three ladies and gentlemen in the following age groups: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over. We'll also have some mostly inexpensive prizes to hand out randomly during the awards ceremony (including Halloween candy and a bunch of other mostly worthless stuff).

Entry fees
To be announced (likely in the $8-$12 range...?)
$2 discount for SVR members
$1 discount for members of other eligible running clubs

(Eligible clubs: Annapolis Striders, Baltimore Road Runners Club, Chesapeake Bay Running Club, DC Road Runners Club, Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club, Fredericksburg Area Running Club, Howard County Striders, Loudoun Road Runners Club, Montgomery County Road Runners Club, Potomac Valley Track Club, Reston Runners, Shenandoah Valley Track Club, South Riding Running Club, Tidal Basin Run, Virginia Happy Trails Running Club, Westminster Road Runners Club, 50 Plus Club)

More registration details will be available in late summer or early fall. (If we decide to offer shirts, they will be sold separately from the base entry fee, so that nobody is forced to pay for a shirt if they don't want one.)

If there are any proceeds from the race, they will be donated to the Browntown Community Center Association.

The fine print
This is a small-ish, relatively low-key event without many volunteers or resources. Please be aware that the course will be open to vehicular traffic, so participants will need to pay extra attention during the race. For safety and insurance reasons, participants may not run the race with personal listening devices (i.e. headphones), baby joggers, or dogs; violators will be disqualified (more info). On-site medical assistance will not be available. Entry fees are non-refundable, and entries are non-transferable (more info).
