Saturday 25 October 2014 9 AM Browntown, VA

Thanks for running! Results & photos coming within a week!
The sixteenth annual Greasy-Gooney 10K is in the books, and we hope everyone enjoyed it! The weather was fantastic, the scenery was stunning, and we had a grand total of 88 finishers, with Charles Bowles (37:14) and Crystal Rapp (43:36) nabbing the overall victories.

Official results will not be up for a few days, as the race director is headed out of town. We'll try to have the final results up by the end of the week. In the meantime, the RD's sister wrote out preliminary results by hand while the rest of us were packing things up, so you can check out this photo of the preliminary results sheets (506 KB) if you're desperate. Undoubtedly there are some handwriting-related misspellings (so don't blame us!); we will try to get everything fixed in the final results.

We will also be posting many photos from the race on both Facebook and Picasa Web Albums; we'll try to remember to send out an e-mail to everyone when the pics are up.

Many many many thanks to our race day volunteer crew, including (in alphabetical order) Kyra Brown, Nancy Bullock, Paul Grosz, Michele Kushner, Lynne Lawrence, Terry Leckie, Alexander Snyder, and Karen Young. If I forgot to mention/credit anyone, please let me know!

Thanks as well to Tom Lacombe, the Shenandoah Valley Runners, Browntown Baptist Church, the Comstock family, and the Browntown Community Center Association. All proceeds from the race benefit the community center.

Looking for another race to run here in the Shenandoah Valley? The next big one is the Care2Cure HD-5K, taking place on Saturday 1 November at Millbrook High School up in Winchester, VA. And the venerable ol' Berryville Turkey Trot Races will be held on Saturday 22 November at the new Clarke County High School in Berryville.

If you have any questions or comments about this year's Greasy-Gooney 10K, or if anything eventful happened during the race that you'd like to pass along, or if you have any photos from the race that you'd like to share, feel free to send us a message. Next year's race is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 24 October 2015, so hopefully we'll see y'all back in Browntown next fall!

Easily the most scenic road race in the Shenandoah Valley, the Greasy-Gooney 10K is slated to take place on Saturday 25 October 2014 in the tiny Warren County village of Browntown. You'll be treated to beautiful views of the rural countryside and the nearby Blue Ridge, all at the height of the valley's fall foliage season. Sure, the course is somewhat challenging, but it's worth the effort. This race may be small, but it's one you're not likely to forget. Runners & joggers of all speeds are welcome to participate!

If you're planning on participating, visit our Final Instructions & Race Day Notes page to get a sense of what to expect on race day!

Race day registration is from 7:45 to 8:45 AM at the corner of Routes 613 & 649. The entry fee is a mere $12, with running club discounts available. See the registration page for more info & printable entry forms!

We have 53 early registrants, but we'll surely see many more race day sign-ups. If you've signed up already, check our list of registered runners to confirm your entry!

We're STILL in need of volunteers on race day to help us with water stops, parking, and the finish line. If you'd be interested in pitching in, contact Karsten Brown by e-mail or at (540) 635-1773.

Parking, registration, and the finish line are all in Browntown, Virginia, near the intersection of Route 649 (Browntown Road) and Route 613 (Bentonville Road). Browntown is about eight miles south of Front Royal. See the directions page for more details!

Schedule of events (Sat. 25 October)
7:45 AM - Race day registration & check-in begins
8:45 AM - Registration ends
9:00 AM - 10K start
10:15 AM - Approximate start of awards ceremony

IMPORTANT NOTE: While parking, registration, and the finish line are all right near each other in Browntown, the starting line is 0.8 miles west of Browntown on Route 613 (Bentonville Road). We don't have any sort of shuttle service, so you'll have to walk or jog there. Thus, please arrive in Browntown early enough to register or check in before 8:45 AM, so that you'll have plenty of time to get to the start before 9:00!

A gorgeous but occasionally tough ten kilometer (6.2 mile) "U"-shaped route starting on Route 613 and following the Gooney Manor Loop up the Greasy Run valley and back down the Gooney Run valley to Browntown. The first half is basically uphill, with 480 feet of elevation gain, while the second half is almost entirely downhill. The course is USATF certified (#VA99025RT). See the course info page for a more detailed description, elevation profile, and maps. And if you want to view some of the scenery beforehand, browse our selection of course photos!

We'll have trophies for the top three males and females overall, plus smaller trophies for the top three ladies and gentlemen in the following age groups: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over. We'll also have some mostly inexpensive prizes to hand out randomly during the awards ceremony (including Halloween candy, a Hello Kitty cocoa mug set, an off-brand lava lamp, a couple books, a handheld water bottle, arm warmers, Spongebob bubble bath, two men's & two ladies' Timex Ironman Triathlon 30-lap watches from the 2013 Annapolis Ten Mile Run, and some other stuff). (Our Facebook page has photos of this year's selection of random prizes!)

Entry fees

If there are any proceeds from the race, they will be donated to the Browntown Community Center Association.

The fine print
This is a small-ish, relatively low-key event without many volunteers or resources. Please be aware that the course will be open to vehicular traffic, so participants will need to pay extra attention during the race. For safety and insurance reasons, participants may not run the race with personal listening devices (i.e. headphones), baby joggers, or dogs; violators will be disqualified (more info). On-site medical assistance will not be available. Entry fees are non-refundable, and entries are non-transferable (more info).
