The race is OVER! Results to be posted within a few days!

Well, that was a bit miserable, wasn't it? Rain, wind, periodic gusts of at least 30 miles per hour... Given the far-less-than-ideal weather, I'm surprised so many people showed up! We had 83 official finishers, with Michelle VanHorn (47:28) and some guy in ugly shorts (37:27) taking the top awards. Good to see a number of local folks, many SVR members, a few Frederick Steeplechasers, and at least one runner celebrating his birthday (hi Bill!).

RESULTS: The complete race results and a report will be posted within a few days, as soon as the co-race director dries out, his fingers recover from being wet for eight hours, and he tracks down to which state all his "CAUTION: RUNNERS IN ROAD" signs were blown. (May his many wind-destroyed foam board signs rest in peace.)

EXTRA SHIRTS: We've got some extras, so if you want a shirt, we're asking $10, plus another $2 if you want us to mail it to you. Just contact Karsten about it. (While our entry fees did include a $5 no-shirt discount-- making it appear as though the shirts were $5 for the runners-- the shirts actually cost us about $10 each, with the extra cost per runner subsidized by a generous donation from longtime friend of the race Bob Gurtler. Many many thanks to Bob for that!)

LOST & FOUND: We found a few unclaimed clothing items inside the community center as we were packing up; we'll post photos of these items here on the site soon. If you know you're missing something, contact Karsten.

PHOTOS: Karsten also took a lot of photos at the finish, although some of the shots might be a little blurred due to precipitation on the camera lens. In any event, if you want him to send you any photos he got of you, send him an e-mail, and he'll try to get those sent to you within a couple weeks. (He has a glacially slow connection to "teh internets", though, so be patient. One of these days he's going to have to get some decent Web space so he has room to post photos online!)

THANK-YOUS: Terry and Karsten want to extend a huge pile of thanks to our volunteers, including Nancy Bullock, Bob Gurtler, Duane Williamson, Alexander Snyder, Nicole Reynolds, Joan Meadows, and Michelle Barron. Tom Lacombe, proprietor of O.J. Rudacille's General Merchandise, is always a huge help to us as well, and many thanks to the Browntown Community Center Association, Browntown Baptist Church, and Dale Ramsey & the Cool Spring Church of God too!

As always, if you have questions, comments, suggestions, or would like to share anything interesting which happened during the race, we welcome your feedback/input! Just e-mail Karsten. Check back here in a couple days to see if the results are up, and hopefully we'll see y'all next year at the 11th annual Greasy-Gooney 10K on Saturday 24 October 2009!

Easily the most scenic road race in the Shenandoah Valley, the Greasy-Gooney 10K is slated to take place on Saturday 25 October 2008 in the tiny Warren County village of Browntown. You'll be treated to beautiful views of the rural countryside and the nearby Blue Ridge, all at the height of the valley's fall foliage season. Sure, the course is somewhat challenging, but it's worth the effort. This race may be small, but it's one you're not likely to forget! Runners & joggers of all speeds are welcome to participate!

WHO'S RUNNING THIS YEAR?
As of 24 October, we have 53 registrants. If you've signed up already, check our list of registered runners to confirm your entry!

FANCY SHIRTS! PINT GLASSES!
In special recognition of our race's tenth running, we decided to get fancy and order up some "performance fabric" shirts instead of boring ol' cotton shirts, and we'll also be giving out Greasy-Gooney 10K pint glasses as awards! (Extra special thanks to longtime participant Bob Gurtler for helping to make all of this possible.)

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!
We're in need of volunteers on race day to help us with water stops, parking, and the finish line. If you'd be interested in pitching in, contact Karsten Brown by e-mail or at (540) 635-1773, or Terry Leckie at (540) 635-1025. All volunteers will receive a free Greasy-Gooney 10K t-shirt!

Location
Parking, registration, and the finish line are all in Browntown, Virginia, near the intersection of Route 649 (Browntown Road) and Route 613 (Bentonville-Browntown Road). Browntown is about eight miles south of Front Royal. See the directions page for more details!

Schedule of events (Sat. 25 October)
7:45 AM - Race day registration & check-in begins
8:45 AM - Registration ends
9:00 AM - 10K start
10:20 AM - Approximate start of awards ceremony

IMPORTANT NOTE: While parking, registration, and the finish line are all right near each other in Browntown, the starting line is 0.8 miles west of Browntown on Route 613 (Bentonville-Browntown Road). We don't have any sort of shuttle service, so you'll have to walk or jog there. Thus, please arrive in Browntown early enough to register or check in before 8:45 AM, so that you'll have plenty of time to get to the start before 9:00!

Course
A gorgeous but occasionally tough ten kilometer (6.2 mile) "U"-shaped route starting on Route 613 and following the Gooney Manor Loop up the Greasy Run valley and back down the Gooney Run valley to Browntown. The first half is basically uphill, with 480 feet of elevation gain, while the second half is almost entirely downhill. The course is USATF certified (#VA99025RT). See the course info page for a more detailed description, elevation profile, and maps. And if you want to view some of the scenery beforehand, browse our selection of course photos!

Awards  Updated!
We'll have trophies and Greasy-Gooney 10K pint glasses for the top three males and females overall. We'll also have pint glasses and certificates for the top three ladies and gentlemen in the following age groups: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over. (Note that we have made a last-minute decision to expand the originally announced 60-69 age group!)

Entry fees
$13 postmarked by Wednesday 8 October
$16 thereafter (including race day)
$1 discount for SVR members
$5 discount if you don't want a race t-shirt

See the registration page for more info about signing up for the race and about this year's fancy "technical fabric" shirts!

Beneficiary
If there are any proceeds from the race, they will go to the Warren Heritage Society, a local historical organization. (Greasy-Gooney 10K founder Patrick Farris is the Heritage Society's Executive Director.)

The fine print
This is a small-ish, relatively low-key event without many volunteers or resources. Please be aware that the course will be open to vehicular traffic, so participants will need to pay extra attention during the race. For safety and insurance reasons, participants may not run the race with headphones, baby joggers, or dogs (more info). On-site medical assistance will not be available. Entry fees are non-refundable, and entries are non-transferable (more info).
