Thanks for running! Results, splits, & photos are up!

Another Greasy-Gooney is in the books! We had an excellent turnout of 93 runners, and while it would've been nice to see the sun during the race, the weather conditions were pretty much perfect for running. Boonsboro (MD) High School standout Sarah Zielinski ran a 42:52 for the women's win, with three-time GG champ Michelle VanHorn running a 43:58 for second. Jordan Chang was this year's men's runner-up with a 38:18, behind the winner's 36:01.

The final results are now posted, sorted by both overall finish place and age group place. Also posted are everybody's 5K split times! If you spot any mistakes, send us an e-mail.

High-resolution race photos are also up, posted to public albums on both Picasa Web Albums and Facebook. Questions about or problems with the photos, let us know. These photos are free for personal use.

Many many many thanks to everyone who volunteered at the race, including (in alphabetical order) Abby Badley, Naomi Badley, Sierra Badley, Doug Berry, the utterly invaluable Kyra Brown & Nancy Bullock, Sari Chapman, brownie maker Chris Farmer, Bob Gurtler, Mary Ellen Hutchins, Phil Laub, Lynne Lawrence, John Shelburne, Lewis Shroyer, Alexander Snyder, and Andreea Whitley. We're extremely grateful for their help. If we forgot to mention any volunteers, please let us know! Thanks as well to Tom Lacombe, Browntown Baptist Church, the Shenandoah Valley Runners, the Ruehling family, and the Browntown Community Center Association. All proceeds from the race benefit the community center.

We hope everyone enjoyed our little event! If you have any questions or comments, or if anything eventful happened at the race that you'd like to pass along, feel free to send us a message. Next year's race is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 27 October 2012, so hopefully we'll see y'all back in Browntown next fall!

Easily the most scenic road race in the Shenandoah Valley, the Greasy-Gooney 10K is slated to take place on Saturday 22 October 2011 in the tiny Warren County village of Browntown. You'll be treated to beautiful views of the rural countryside and the nearby Blue Ridge, all at the height of the valley's fall foliage season. Sure, the course is somewhat challenging, but it's worth the effort. This race may be small, but it's one you're not likely to forget. Runners & joggers of all speeds are welcome to participate!

Community Yard Sale on race day! It turns out that the BCCA is hosting a yard sale at the community center on the day of our race, from 8 AM to 2 PM. So while you're down there using the bathroom before or after the race, why not bring a few extra bucks and peruse the yard sale tables?

Location
Parking, registration, and the finish line are all in Browntown, Virginia, near the intersection of Route 649 (Browntown Road) and Route 613 (Bentonville-Browntown Road). Browntown is about eight miles south of Front Royal. See the directions page for more details!

Schedule of events (Sat. 22 October)
7:45 AM - Race day registration & check-in begins
8:45 AM - Registration ends
9:00 AM - 10K start
10:15 AM - Approximate start of awards ceremony

IMPORTANT NOTE: While parking, registration, and the finish line are all right near each other in Browntown, the starting line is 0.8 miles west of Browntown on Route 613 (Bentonville-Browntown Road). We don't have any sort of shuttle service, so you'll have to walk or jog there. Thus, please arrive in Browntown early enough to register or check in before 8:45 AM, so that you'll have plenty of time to get to the start before 9:00!

Course
A gorgeous but occasionally tough ten kilometer (6.2 mile) "U"-shaped route starting on Route 613 and following the Gooney Manor Loop up the Greasy Run valley and back down the Gooney Run valley to Browntown. The first half is basically uphill, with 480 feet of elevation gain, while the second half is almost entirely downhill. The course is USATF certified (#VA99025RT). See the course info page for a more detailed description, elevation profile, and maps. And if you want to view some of the scenery beforehand, browse our selection of course photos!

Awards
We'll have trophies for the top three males and females overall, plus smaller trophies for the top three ladies and gentlemen in the following age groups: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over. We'll also have some inexpensive prizes (Halloween candy, books, etc.) to hand out randomly during the awards ceremony.

Entry fees

Beneficiary
If there are any proceeds from the race, they will be donated to the Browntown Community Center Association.

The fine print
This is a small-ish, relatively low-key event without many volunteers or resources. Please be aware that the course will be open to vehicular traffic, so participants will need to pay extra attention during the race. For safety and insurance reasons, participants may not run the race with headphones, baby joggers, or dogs (more info). On-site medical assistance will not be available. Entry fees are non-refundable, and entries are non-transferable (more info).
